Are Orchids Safe for Cats?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

Generally safe
The moth orchid (Phalaenopsis), the orchid sold in most Canadian grocery and hardware stores, is listed as non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses by the ASPCA. Chewing on any plant can still cause mild vomiting, and fertilizers or pesticides on the plant can be harmful.
Still be careful with
- Orchid fertilizer and systemic pesticides
- Bark potting mix — a choking or blockage risk if eaten
- Other orchid types you can't identify — check the label
- Lilies often sold in the same bouquets — extremely toxic to cats
If your cat chewed a plant
- Remove plant material from their mouth and fur, and keep the plant away.
- Take a photo of the plant or keep the label — identification matters.
- Call your vet or a pet poison hotline. With any lily, go to a vet immediately.
