Yes — toxic
Yes. Tulips contain tulipalin compounds that are toxic to cats and dogs. All parts can irritate the mouth and stomach, and the bulb has the highest concentration. Spring bouquets and garden bulbs are the usual sources of exposure.
Symptoms
- Drooling
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Depression or lethargy
- With large bulb ingestions: faster heart rate and breathing changes
If your cat chewed a plant
- Remove plant material from their mouth and fur, and keep the plant away.
- Take a photo of the plant or keep the label — identification matters.
- Call your vet or a pet poison hotline. With any lily, go to a vet immediately.
Safer flowers for cat homes
Roses, sunflowers, orchids (Phalaenopsis), snapdragons and gerbera daisies are listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA. Never bring lilies into a home with cats.
