Are Roses Toxic to Cats?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

No — non-toxic
True roses (Rosa species) are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. A cat nibbling petals may get a mild upset stomach, but the bigger risks are thorns, florist preservatives, pesticides, and toxic flowers mixed into the same bouquet — especially lilies.
Watch out for
- Thorns — can injure the mouth, paws or eyes
- Flower food packets and pesticides
- Lilies, tulips or daffodils in mixed bouquets
- 'Desert rose' and 'Christmas rose' — different plants that are toxic
If your cat chewed a plant
- Remove plant material from their mouth and fur, and keep the plant away.
- Take a photo of the plant or keep the label — identification matters.
- Call your vet or a pet poison hotline. With any lily, go to a vet immediately.
