How to Choose the Best Puppy Food in Canada

Puppies need more calories, protein and carefully balanced calcium and phosphorus than adult dogs. The most important thing is a food labelled complete and balanced for growth — and, for large breeds, one made specifically for large-breed puppies.

Key points

  • Choose 'growth' or 'all life stages' food that meets AAFCO profiles
  • Large-breed puppies need controlled calcium and calories to lower the risk of joint problems
  • Feed 3 to 4 meals a day until about 6 months, then 2
  • Keep your puppy lean — you should feel, but not see, the ribs

When to switch to adult food

  • Small breeds: around 9 to 12 months
  • Medium breeds: around 12 months
  • Large and giant breeds: 12 to 24 months — ask your vet
