Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?

Yes — check for xylitol

Yes. Plain, unsalted peanut butter is safe for most dogs in small amounts and is popular for hiding pills or filling toys. The one big danger is xylitol, a sweetener added to some 'sugar-free' or 'reduced sugar' nut butters, which can be fatal to dogs.

Before you share

  • Read the ingredient list for xylitol or 'birch sugar'
  • Choose products with just peanuts and maybe salt
  • It is very high in fat and calories — a teaspoon goes a long way
