Is Xylitol Toxic to Dogs?

Deadly for dogs

Yes, very. Xylitol (sometimes listed as birch sugar) is a sweetener found in sugar-free gum, mints, candy, some peanut and nut butters, baked goods, toothpaste and chewable vitamins. In dogs it triggers a large insulin release that can drop blood sugar dangerously within 10 to 60 minutes, and larger doses can cause liver failure.

Symptoms

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness, wobbling, collapse
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Yellow gums or eyes (liver damage), sometimes a day or more later

What to do

  • Treat this as an emergency — go to a vet immediately.
  • Bring the package so the vet can estimate the dose.
  • Check peanut butter labels before using it for treats or pills.

Cats and xylitol

Cats seem much less affected, but there is no reason to give it to them.
