Can Dogs Have Cinnamon?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

Not toxic — but not needed
A small sprinkle of cinnamon is not toxic to dogs. Large amounts, cinnamon sticks and cinnamon essential oil can irritate the mouth and stomach, and inhaled powder can cause coughing. The bigger danger is what cinnamon usually comes with: nutmeg, sugar, raisins and xylitol in baked goods.
Watch for
- Nutmeg — toxic in larger amounts (myristicin)
- Cinnamon rolls and buns — sugar, fat, sometimes raisins
- Sugar-free baking — may contain xylitol
- Cinnamon oil — concentrated; keep away
Signs of too much
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Mouth irritation, drooling
- Coughing or choking from inhaled powder
