Why Is My Dog Shaking or Trembling?

Shaking can be completely normal — a cold, excited or nervous dog trembles. It can also be a sign of pain, nausea, low blood sugar or poisoning. Context matters.

Common causes

  • Cold — small, short-coated breeds especially
  • Fear or anxiety — storms, fireworks, vet visits
  • Pain — back, joints, belly
  • Nausea
  • Old-age tremors in the back legs
  • Toxins — chocolate, caffeine, xylitol, certain medications

See a vet today if

  • Shaking with vomiting, weakness, or collapse
  • Possible exposure to a toxin
  • Seizure-like movements or loss of awareness
  • Shaking with obvious pain or a hunched back

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If you're worried about your pet, call your vet or an emergency clinic.
