Why Is My Dog Panting So Much?
Dogs pant to cool down, so panting after play or on a warm day is normal. Heavy panting at rest, at night, or with other signs can point to heatstroke, pain, stress, heart or lung problems, or Cushing's disease.
Heatstroke — act now
Heavy panting with drooling, bright red or pale gums, vomiting, wobbliness or collapse on a hot day is an emergency. Move your dog to shade, wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water, and drive to a vet.
Other causes
- Pain or discomfort
- Anxiety — storms, travel
- Fever or infection
- Heart or lung disease
- Cushing's disease in older dogs (with increased thirst and appetite)
- Some medications such as steroids
See a vet today if
- Panting at rest in a cool room
- Panting with a swollen belly or retching — possible bloat
- Blue, grey or very pale gums
