Dog Not Eating: What It Means
Healthy adult dogs sometimes skip a meal, especially in heat or after a change in routine. Not eating for more than 24 hours, or refusing food along with other symptoms, needs attention. Puppies and small dogs should be seen sooner.
Common causes
- Stomach upset or dietary indiscretion
- Dental pain or a broken tooth
- Stress — moving, boarding, new pets
- Recent vaccination (usually brief)
- Illness — infection, kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis
- Swallowed object causing a blockage
See a vet today if
- No food for 24 hours (12 for puppies or toy breeds)
- Vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain as well
- Refusing water
- Lethargy, weakness or pale gums
- Possible swallowed toy, sock or bone
Gentle things to try
- Offer their normal food at a normal time; remove after 20 minutes
- Warm wet food slightly to boost smell
- Don't switch to rich human food — it can worsen stomach upset
