Why Is My Dog Coughing?

A dry, honking cough after boarding or daycare is often kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis), which usually clears in 1–3 weeks. Coughing in older dogs, at night or with breathing effort can signal heart or lung disease.

Common causes

  • Kennel cough — honking cough, otherwise well
  • Collapsing trachea — small breeds, goose-honk when excited or pulling on the leash
  • Heart disease — cough at night or rest, tiring easily
  • Pneumonia — wet cough, fever, lethargy
  • Something stuck in the throat

See a vet today if

  • Laboured, fast or noisy breathing
  • Blue or grey gums
  • Coughing up blood
  • Fever, not eating, or very lethargic
  • A puppy or senior dog with a cough

At home

  • Use a harness instead of a collar
  • Keep away from other dogs while coughing
  • Humid air (steamy bathroom) can ease irritation
