Why Is My Cat Sneezing?

Occasional sneezing is normal. Frequent sneezing with runny eyes or nose is usually an upper respiratory infection (cat flu), often caused by feline herpesvirus or calicivirus — especially in kittens and shelter cats.

Common causes

  • Viral upper respiratory infection
  • Dust, perfume or litter irritation
  • Dental disease affecting the sinuses
  • Something stuck in the nose
  • Nasal polyps in younger cats

See a vet today if

  • Not eating for more than 24 hours (cats who can't smell often stop eating)
  • Green or yellow discharge, or nosebleeds
  • Open-mouth breathing
  • Kittens with any respiratory signs

Home care

  • Gently wipe eyes and nose with a damp cloth
  • Run a humidifier or sit in a steamy bathroom
  • Warm strong-smelling wet food to encourage eating
