Why Is My Cat Peeing Outside the Litter Box?

House-soiling is one of the most common cat problems and often has a medical cause such as a urinary tract issue, bladder inflammation or crystals. Rule out medical causes first, then look at the box and stress.

Emergency warning

A male cat repeatedly straining in the litter box with little or no urine may have a urethral blockage. This is life-threatening within hours — go to a vet immediately.

Medical causes

  • Feline idiopathic cystitis (stress-related bladder inflammation)
  • Urinary crystals or stones
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney disease, diabetes or hyperthyroidism (more urine)
  • Arthritis making the box hard to climb into

Litter box fixes

  • One box per cat, plus one
  • Scoop daily; full clean weekly
  • Unscented, fine-grained litter most cats prefer
  • Large, uncovered boxes in quiet spots
  • Low entry for older cats
