How Much Should I Feed My Dog?

There's no single right amount — it depends on weight, age, activity and the specific food. Start with the label, then adjust based on your dog's body condition every few weeks.

Start with the label

Feeding charts give a range by weight. Use your dog's ideal weight, not current weight if overweight, and include treats in the daily total.

Check body condition

  • You should feel the ribs easily without pressing hard
  • A visible waist from above
  • A tummy tuck from the side

Adjust

  • Gaining unwanted weight: reduce by about 10% and recheck in 2–4 weeks
  • Losing too much: increase by about 10%
  • Measure with a kitchen scale — cups vary a lot

Life stages

Puppies need more calories per kilogram and several meals a day. Neutered and senior dogs usually need less.
