How Long Do Cats Live?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

Most domestic cats live around 12 to 18 years, and well-cared-for indoor cats often reach their late teens or early 20s. Outdoor cats tend to have shorter lives because of traffic, predators, fights and infectious disease.
What affects lifespan
- Indoor vs outdoor lifestyle
- Spaying or neutering
- Healthy weight — obesity raises diabetes and arthritis risk
- Dental care
- Regular vet checkups that catch kidney disease, thyroid disease and diabetes early
Cat years to human years
A 1-year-old cat is roughly a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old cat about 24. After that, each cat year is about 4 human years. Use our age calculator for your cat's exact equivalent.
Helping your cat live longer
- Annual checkups, twice yearly for seniors (about 10+)
- Keep vaccines and parasite prevention current
- Measure food to prevent weight gain
- Provide play, climbing and enrichment
- Watch for changes in thirst, appetite, litter habits or weight
