Flea & Tick Prevention in Canada
Blacklegged ticks, which can carry Lyme disease, are spreading across southern Canada. Ticks become active whenever temperatures rise above about 4°C, so in many regions prevention is recommended from spring through late fall, or year-round.
Why it matters
- Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections
- Flea allergy dermatitis and tapeworms
- Fleas can infest your home quickly
Check after walks
- Run your hands over the body, especially ears, neck, armpits, groin and between toes
- Remove ticks with fine tweezers or a tick tool, pulling straight out
- Save the tick in a sealed bag if your vet wants to identify it
Choosing a product
Your vet can recommend chewables or topicals based on your region and pet. Never use dog flea products on cats — some contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats.
