Acana Cat Food Review (Canada)
Acana is made by Champion Petfoods, a company founded in Alberta that also makes Orijen. This is an independent review: nobody paid for it and we don't earn a commission from it.
Quick verdict
A high-protein dry food with a lot of animal ingredients. It suits many healthy adult cats. It costs more than grocery-store brands, and a rich food can upset some cats' stomachs. It's dry food, so cats with kidney or urinary problems may do better on more wet food.
Pros
- Animal proteins are the first ingredients.
- Made in Canada and the US by a Canadian-founded company.
- Several formulas, including indoor, limited-ingredient and wet options.
- Widely sold at Canadian pet stores.
Cons
- Expensive per kilogram.
- High protein and fat can cause loose stools during the switch.
- Recipes have changed over the years, so check the current label.
- It's dry food: low in moisture for cats that drink little water.
What to check on the bag
- An AAFCO (or equivalent) statement saying it's "complete and balanced" for your cat's life stage.
- The calorie count per cup, to portion it correctly.
- Whether it's the indoor, kitten or adult formula.
How to switch safely
Over 7–10 days, mix in more of the new food and less of the old each day. If your cat vomits, gets diarrhea or stops eating, slow down. Call your vet if it lasts more than a day or two.
Alternatives to compare
Look at other high-protein brands at a similar price, plus a wet food for extra moisture. Our cat food guide explains how to compare labels.
