Can Dogs Eat Tomatoes?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

Ripe flesh only — small amounts
Ripe, red tomato flesh is generally safe for dogs as an occasional small treat. The green parts of the plant — stems, leaves, vines and unripe green tomatoes — contain solanine and tomatine, which can upset the stomach and, in large amounts, affect the nervous system. Fence off tomato plants in the garden.
Signs your dog ate too much of the plant
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Drooling, belly pain
- Lethargy or weakness
- Wobbliness or tremors (rare, large exposures)
Tomato foods to avoid
- Pasta sauce, ketchup and salsa — often contain onion, garlic, salt and sugar
- Soups and canned tomatoes with added salt
- Pizza
How to share it safely
- Treats, including fruit, should stay under about 10% of daily calories.
- Wash it and serve it plain — no sugar, syrup, salt or seasoning.
- Start with a small piece and watch for stomach upset over 24 hours.
- Skip it if your dog is diabetic, overweight or on a vet-prescribed diet.
