Can Dogs Eat Popcorn?

Only plain, in small amounts

Plain air-popped popcorn in small amounts is fine for most dogs. Movie-theatre or microwave popcorn is a different story — butter, salt and flavourings can cause stomach upset, and unpopped kernels can crack teeth or get stuck in the throat.

Risks

  • Salt and butter — vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis risk
  • Unpopped kernels — dental and choking hazard
  • Hulls stuck between teeth or gums

How to share it safely

  • Treats, including people food, should stay under about 10% of daily calories.
  • Offer plain food only — no salt, butter, sugar, spices, onion or garlic.
  • Start with a small piece and watch for stomach upset over 24 hours.
  • Skip it entirely if your dog has a medical diet or a condition your vet is managing.
