Can Dogs Eat Pineapple?
Last reviewed October 2026 · Based on 2 published veterinary sources (listed below)

Yes — fresh, in moderation
Yes. Fresh pineapple flesh is safe for most dogs in small amounts. It is high in natural sugar and acidity, so a few bite-size pieces are plenty. The spiky skin and hard core are choking and blockage hazards and should never be given.
How much
A few small chunks for a medium dog. Frozen pieces make a summer treat — cut small for small breeds.
Avoid
- Skin, crown and core
- Canned pineapple in syrup
- Dried pineapple (concentrated sugar)
- Large amounts — can cause diarrhea
Does pineapple stop dogs eating poop?
It's a common claim, but there is no good evidence it works. Talk to your vet if your dog eats stool, since it can have medical or behavioural causes.
How to share it safely
- Treats, including fruit, should stay under about 10% of daily calories.
- Wash it and serve it plain — no sugar, syrup, salt or seasoning.
- Start with a small piece and watch for stomach upset over 24 hours.
- Skip it if your dog is diabetic, overweight or on a vet-prescribed diet.
