Dog — Can Dogs Eat Oranges?

Yes — small amounts

Yes. A segment or two of peeled orange is safe for most dogs. Oranges are high in sugar and acid, so too much can cause stomach upset. Many dogs dislike the smell of citrus anyway — never force it.

Avoid

  • Peel and pith — hard to digest and contain citrus oils
  • Seeds
  • Orange juice — concentrated sugar
  • Citrus essential oils — can be toxic

Other citrus

Mandarins and clementines are similar to oranges. Lemons and limes are too sour and their oils can irritate the stomach; avoid them.

How to share it safely

  • Treats, including fruit, should stay under about 10% of daily calories.
  • Wash it and serve it plain — no sugar, syrup, salt or seasoning.
  • Start with a small piece and watch for stomach upset over 24 hours.
  • Skip it if your dog is diabetic, overweight or on a vet-prescribed diet.
