Can Dogs Eat Onions?

No — toxic

No. Onions, along with garlic, leeks, shallots and chives, contain compounds that damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. Raw, cooked, dried and powdered forms are all harmful, so watch for onion powder in gravy, soups, baby food and leftovers. Cats are even more sensitive than dogs.

Symptoms

Signs can be delayed by several days, which makes the cause easy to miss.

  • Weakness and tiredness
  • Pale gums
  • Fast breathing or heart rate
  • Red or brown urine
  • Vomiting, drooling, loss of appetite

What to do if your dog ate it

  • Remove any remaining food and note roughly how much was eaten and when.
  • Call your vet, an emergency clinic, or a pet poison hotline right away — before symptoms start.
  • Do not make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to. It can cause harm with some substances.
  • Bring the packaging with you if you go to the clinic.

Is a small amount OK?

A tiny piece in one meal is unlikely to cause anemia in a large dog, but damage adds up with repeated small amounts. Avoid feeding table scraps cooked with onion.
