Can Dogs Eat Cheese?

Yes, in moderation

Yes. Small amounts of plain, mild cheese such as cheddar or mozzarella are fine for most dogs and make useful training treats or pill pockets. Cheese is high in fat and salt, so keep portions small.

When to avoid cheese

  • Blue cheeses (Stilton, Roquefort) can contain roquefortine C, which may cause tremors
  • Cheese with garlic, onion, chives or herbs
  • Dogs that are overweight or have had pancreatitis
  • Dogs that get diarrhea or gas from dairy (lactose intolerance)

How much?

Treats of all kinds should stay under about 10% of your dog's daily calories. For a small dog, that is a cube or two of cheese.
