Can Dogs Eat Avocado?
Caution
A small amount of plain avocado flesh rarely harms a dog, but it is fatty and can upset the stomach. The bigger risks are the pit, which can block the intestines, and the skin and leaves, which contain more persin. Avocado is seriously toxic to birds, rabbits and some other small animals.
Watch for
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Belly pain, straining, not eating — possible pit blockage
- Pancreatitis signs after a fatty meal (hunched posture, vomiting)
What to do
If your dog swallowed a pit or shows vomiting, belly pain or refuses food, call your vet. For birds, any avocado exposure is an emergency.
