Why is my dog coughing like something is stuck in his throat?

A honking cough that sounds like something is stuck is classic for kennel cough, especially after boarding, daycare or the dog park. It can also be reverse sneezing (harmless snorting fits), collapsing trachea in small breeds, or an actual object.

See a vet if: the cough lasts more than a few days, your dog has fever, stops eating, has trouble breathing, or is a puppy or senior. Go immediately if your dog is choking, pawing at the mouth, or has blue gums.
